A provable history of paying taxes is seen as one way to show good faith, that’s why many undocumented immigrants pay their taxes every year, in hope it will help them become citizens. Also, it is a way to show that you have lived in the United States for a certain amount of time.
How undocumented workers can pay taxes without a Social Security Number?
In 1996, the IRS created the Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN), which is a tax processing number for taxpayers who are not eligible to obtain a Social Security Number (SSNs). It does not confer immigration status or work authorization and it cannot be used after obtaining a SSN.
You can request your ITIN by filling out the W-7 Form. If you want to know more information about the ITIN number application, please visit the following link: https://www.irs.gov/individuals/how-do-i-apply-for-an-itin
People that are eligible for an ITIN are: unauthorized immigrants, lawfully present individuals, and U.S. resident aliens/nonresident aliens.
When do you have to pay your taxes?
For this year, the deadline to file your income tax is April 18, though you can file an extension for October 15. It is very important that you pay your taxes on time to avoid problems with immigration in the United States.
